Chapter 7 - ETHAN REMEMBERED THE WRONG THING FOR GARY
Ethan’s child advocacy interview produced no dramatic revelation.
That made Brooke trust it more.
He described Gary yelling.
Breaking things occasionally.
Using the belt against furniture to scare him twice.
Never striking him with it.
He also described something that seemed minor.
Gary often questioned him about Lucas.
Did he remember his real dad?
Did he want Lucas back?
Did Brooke talk about Lucas?
Did Melissa?
Gary called the questions jokes.
Ethan did not experience them that way.
Then the interviewer asked why Ethan drew the green truck.
“Because I saw it.”
Brooke learned this later through Carla.
Saw it where?
Outside his school.
Three weeks earlier.
Lucas had not approached Ethan.
He had gone to the school office after his attorney advised him that any contact needed to remain formal.
He wanted to confirm where notices concerning a possible reunification plan should be sent.
Ethan saw him through the cafeteria window.
Recognized the truck from an old photograph Brooke had shown him.
He drew it later.
Gary found the drawing.
That was the first time Gary ripped one up.
Brooke had not known.
The kitchen drawing was Ethan making it again.
That explained the green paint on the table.
The crayons.
Gary’s disproportionate fury.
But another detail disturbed Brooke more.
Ethan said Melissa had seen the first torn drawing too.
“What did Mom do?” the interviewer asked.
Ethan answered:
“She told me to make a different one.”
Brooke listened when Carla summarized the concern.
Her mother had not simply failed to confront Gary.
She had taught Ethan how to avoid triggering him.
Exactly the way Brooke had.
Three people adjusting themselves around one adult.
The pattern was now impossible to dismiss.
Then Carla asked Brooke whether she had somewhere safe to stay if tension increased.
Brooke said Lucas.
Carla did not approve that immediately.
Lucas still had an old custody history that needed review.
So Brooke stayed temporarily with her aunt Kelly nearby while Ethan remained with Melissa under the safety plan.
Brooke hated leaving him.
Ethan hugged her at the front door.
“Are you coming back?”
“Of course.”
He whispered:
“Don’t make Gary mad because of me.”
Brooke nearly broke.
Nine years old.
Still thinking the adults’ behavior was his responsibility.
