Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF GARY’S HELP
Gary had moved into Melissa’s life when everything was collapsing.
That part was true.
Lucas fell behind on support during the worst period of his drinking.
Melissa worked two jobs.
Brooke was eleven.
Ethan was three.
Gary paid for daycare twice.
Then a furnace repair.
Then the attorney retainer Melissa needed during the custody dispute.
He never demanded repayment.
At first.
Over time, his help became the foundation of the household.
The mortgage was refinanced after they married.
Gary’s income covered most expenses.
Melissa reduced her hours at the insurance office.
Brooke finally understood why her mother seemed terrified whenever Gary threatened to leave after arguments.
Security had become tied to him.
And Gary knew it.
After the kitchen incident, Melissa told Carla that Gary had “never behaved that way before.”
Brooke interrupted.
“Yes, he has.”
Melissa stared at her.
Brooke listed what she remembered.
Gary punching the garage door.
Gary breaking Ethan’s game controller because he talked back.
Gary slamming a plate into the sink during Thanksgiving.
Gary telling Brooke she could “find another house” when she criticized him.
Nothing individually matched what happened in the kitchen.
Together, they described a household organized around one person’s temper.
Melissa began crying.
“I was managing it.”
Brooke felt something inside her harden.
“No. We were.”
That sentence changed the room.
Brooke had spent years taking Ethan upstairs when voices rose.
Turning music louder.
Distracting him.
Teaching him when to stay quiet.
She thought she was being a good sister.
She was also adapting to a problem adults were supposed to solve.
Carla established a temporary safety plan while the case was reviewed.
Gary would not return to the home.
His contact with Ethan would be limited.
Melissa agreed.
Then Gary stopped depositing his paycheck into their shared household account.
The mortgage payment was due in nine days.
Melissa panicked.
“He’s punishing you,” Brooke said.
“No. He’s protecting himself.”

Brooke looked at her mother.
The betrayal was becoming clearer.
