Chapter 1 - THE MAN GARY NEVER EXPECTED TO SEE

The leather belt cracked against the kitchen table less than a foot from Ethan’s hands.

Nine-year-old Ethan jerked backward into the counter.

A glass tipped over behind him.

Water spread across the tile, carrying three green crayons into the puddle.

Gary raised the belt again.

“Pick up that mess.”

Ethan stared at the broken glass near his sneakers.

He was too frightened to move.

Brooke came through the kitchen doorway just as Gary slammed a wooden chair into the wall.

She did not stop to think.

She drove herself between Gary and her little brother and shoved him backward.

“Stay away from my little brother!”

Gary spun toward her.

The belt came up.

Behind them, their mother, Melissa, stood in the doorway.

Watching.

Not screaming.

Not calling anyone.

Just watching.

“I’m scared!” Ethan cried. “Stop it!”

Gary stepped toward Brooke.

“I’m going to teach this brat a lesson.”

Brooke backed Ethan away from the glass.

“Don’t you dare touch my brother.”

Gary grabbed Brooke’s jacket.

Then the phone on the table began vibrating.

Brooke twisted away and snatched it.

One name appeared.

LUKE.

She answered.

“We’re in the kitchen.”

Gary stopped moving.

Melissa’s face changed.

Three hard knocks struck the front door.

Gary looked toward Melissa.

“You called him?”

Melissa whispered, “I didn’t.”

The doorknob turned.

A tall man stepped into the entryway.

Older than Brooke remembered.

Gray beginning at his temples.

Rain on his jacket.

He looked at Gary holding the belt.

Then at Ethan hiding behind Brooke.

His expression hardened.

“Stay away from the kids.”

Gary went pale.

So did Melissa.

Ethan looked around Brooke’s shoulder.

“Who is that?”

Brooke could barely answer.

May you like

Because six years ago, her mother had told her this man wanted nothing more to do with them.

“He’s our dad.”
