Chapter 11 - BROOKE HAD TO ADMIT WHAT SHE HAD BECOME TOO

Therapy began for Brooke and Ethan separately.

Brooke resisted at first.

She believed Ethan needed help.

She believed Melissa needed help.

Gary definitely needed help.

Brooke considered herself the person who had handled things.

Her therapist challenged that immediately.

“You’re seventeen.”

“I know.”

“You talk like Ethan is your child.”

Brooke bristled.

“Somebody has to protect him.”

“Yes.”

The therapist waited.

“Who protected you?”

Brooke said nothing.

For years she had built an identity around being tougher than everyone else.

She intercepted arguments.

Watched Gary’s moods.

Checked Ethan’s homework.

Made dinner when Melissa worked late.

Covered for family problems with teachers and friends.

The kitchen confrontation had made her feel powerful because she finally fought back.

But it also revealed how abnormal her role had become.

Brooke had kicked an adult because she believed physical intervention was the only way to keep Ethan safe.

Maybe in that instant she had been right to intervene.

But she did not want violence to become her language too.

She began learning another kind of protection.

Calling adults earlier.

Documenting concerns.

Leaving unsafe rooms.

Not arguing until someone exploded.

Trusting professionals without surrendering her own judgment.

Lucas had to learn similar lessons.

He wanted to defend Brooke publicly.

His attorney advised him not to turn her into evidence for his custody case.

So he did not.

That mattered.

Gary began an intervention program focused on anger and family violence as part of the ongoing proceedings.

Melissa entered individual counseling.

Brooke did not treat either step as redemption.

She had learned beginnings were cheap.

Patterns were what mattered.

Then Ethan asked whether he could see Lucas.

Not live with him.

Not call him Dad immediately.

Just meet him.

The family therapist approved a professionally supported first visit.

Melissa had to decide whether to oppose it again.

This time, she signed the consent form.

Her hand shook.

But she signed.
