Chapter 9 - LEGACY BECAME A BUSINESS PROBLEM

Mercer Residential Holdings had four outside board members.

Arthur had insisted on it.

Evan had always complained that his father did not trust family enough.

Now Claire understood why.

Daniel notified the board that Evan had attempted a trust-related restructuring based on claims of “traditional succession” that were inconsistent with Arthur’s governing documents.

The board did not fire Evan.

It did something he hated more.

It began asking questions.

What exactly had he told investors about future family control?

Had he presented himself as the sole long-term decision-maker?

Had he made commitments involving trust assets he did not control?

Evan’s position as company president was not immediately threatened.

But his authority stopped feeling automatic.

Then Rebecca learned something else.

Evan had told Mark, her estranged husband, that if Rebecca reconciled with him, Evan could guarantee their son future financial protection through the Mercer trust.

Rebecca was furious.

“He used my marriage?”

Claire asked.

“He used my baby.”

That afternoon Rebecca formally notified her divorce attorney that Evan had no authority to negotiate any financial expectations concerning her child.

The Mercer women stopped speaking through Evan.

That alone weakened him.

Diane called Claire.

“I owe you an apology.”

Claire waited.

Diane continued.

“I heard him say things about sons for years.”

“And?”

“I told myself Arthur had raised him that way.”

“Did he?”

“I’m starting to think I blamed a dead man because it was easier than confronting my living son.”

Claire appreciated the sentence because it did not ask for forgiveness.

Then Diane said something else.

“Arthur almost removed Evan from company succession once.”

Claire went still.

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

“Why?”

Diane hesitated.

“It involved Rebecca.”

Claire looked across the room at Lily coloring quietly.

“What happened?”

“Ask Rebecca what Evan did with her first business.”

Claire did.

Rebecca’s face changed before Claire finished the question.

“I thought Dad promised never to tell anyone.”
