Chapter 1 - THE EMPTY SPACE ON THE WALL

Evan pulled Lily’s framed photograph from the family wall while she was standing three feet away.
He didn’t hesitate.
He didn’t pretend the frame had fallen.
He lifted it off the hook, looked directly at his eight-year-old daughter, and dropped it face-down into a moving box.
“This family needs a son, not another girl.”
Lily clutched her stuffed rabbit against her chest.
The empty rectangle on the wall looked brighter than the surrounding paint.
Claire heard the thud from the kitchen.
She walked into the family room and found Lily’s books, clothes, and ballet bag stacked beside the hallway.
“What is this?”
Lily answered before Evan could.
“Daddy said my room isn’t mine anymore.”
Claire turned.
Evan stood beside the box in a charcoal sweater, expression perfectly controlled.
“My sister and her baby are coming for a while.”
“Your sister has a house.”
“She’s separating from Mark.”
“So?”
“She needs support.”
Claire looked toward Lily.
“Why does supporting your sister require throwing our daughter out of her bedroom?”
Evan pushed the box behind him.
“She can use the office.”
“The office doesn’t have a bed.”
“She’ll adjust.”
Lily’s voice became smaller.
“Daddy said I should get used to knowing my place.”
Claire stared at her husband.
Evan had always talked about legacy.
The Mercer name.
His grandfather’s company.
His father’s disappointment that Evan had no son.
Claire had rolled her eyes at most of it.
She had never heard him speak to Lily like this.
She stepped toward the moving box.
Evan blocked her.
“Don’t.”
Claire’s anger sharpened.
“What are you hiding?”
“I’m not hiding anything.”
He lifted the box.
Something slid from beneath Lily’s photograph.
A sealed deep-burgundy envelope landed on the hardwood floor.
Lily reached for it immediately.
“Mom!”
Evan’s face changed.
Lily grabbed the envelope first.
“Grandpa told me only Mom could open that.”
Claire looked at her daughter.
“What?”
Evan moved.
“Give me that.”
Lily backed away.
Claire took the envelope from her.
“Claire.”
For the first time in twelve years of marriage, she heard fear in Evan’s voice.
She broke the seal.
A folded document began sliding out.
At the top was the letterhead of a family law firm Claire recognized.
Below it was her late father-in-law’s name.
