Chapter 12 - THE SON EVAN HAD SPENT HIS LIFE TRYING TO BECOME

Evan agreed to family therapy as part of their temporary parenting arrangement.

He hated it.

Claire could tell.

The therapist asked a simple question.

“What did being Arthur Mercer’s son mean to you?”

Evan laughed defensively.

“Everything.”

“Good everything?”

The laugh disappeared.

Arthur had been demanding.

Not cruel.

But Mercer Residential Holdings was the family identity.

Evan learned young that he would someday carry it.

Rebecca was allowed to explore.

Evan was expected to inherit.

At fifteen, he worked summers at properties.

At seventeen, Arthur made him sit through finance meetings.

At twenty-three, Arthur rejected Evan’s plan to move to California.

“You have responsibilities here.”

Evan had spent decades resenting the burden while building his entire self-worth around being chosen for it.

Then Lily was born.

He loved her.

But something inside him panicked.

If the Mercer line ended with a daughter, what had all his own sacrifice meant?

Claire stared at him.

“So you decided to give the same burden to a boy who doesn’t even exist.”

Evan looked down.

“I thought if I had a son, it would make sense.”

“What would?”

“My life.”

Claire felt heartbreak before anger.

Then remembered Lily’s boxes.

“You were using our daughter to solve a problem in your identity.”

“I know how that sounds.”

“It sounds exactly like what you did.”

Evan’s eyes filled.

“I never wanted her to feel unwanted.”

Claire leaned forward.

“You removed her face from the wall.”

“I was angry.”

“You packed her room.”

“I was trying to help Rebecca.”

“You planned the nursery before Rebecca left Mark.”

Evan stopped.

There was no defense left.

The therapist asked, “What were you trying to protect?”

Evan whispered, “The idea that Dad was right to choose me.”

Claire finally understood the ugliest part.

Evan was not only obsessed with a future son.

He needed the family structure to validate his own childhood.

If daughters inherited equally, if Rebecca mattered equally, if Lily carried the Mercer name forward just as fully, then perhaps being “the son” had never made Evan special.

He had sacrificed freedom for an advantage that should never have existed.

Understanding him did not make Claire trust him.

It made the damage coherent.

That was different.
