Chapter 10 - EVAN HAD ALREADY ERASED ONE WOMAN
Rebecca had founded a small property-staging company at twenty-six.
Claire vaguely remembered it.
It lasted less than two years.
Rebecca always said she lost interest.
That was not true.
She had secured a promising contract staging units for a Mercer-owned development.
Then Evan intervened.
He convinced Arthur that awarding the contract to Rebecca would look like favoritism.
Arthur agreed the deal should undergo independent bidding.
Rebecca accepted that.
What she did not know was that Evan then steered internal staff toward another vendor.
A vendor owned by one of his college friends.
Rebecca’s company lost the contract.
Three months later it folded.
Arthur eventually discovered what Evan had done.
He forced Evan to repay certain company costs and nearly removed him from succession planning.
But Rebecca asked her father not to make it public.
She was embarrassed.
Evan apologized privately.
Arthur let him remain.
Years later, Arthur regretted that choice.
The trust amendment and letters suddenly carried a different meaning.
Arthur had not created protections because Evan made offensive jokes.
He had already watched his son manipulate family structures to exclude a woman when her success threatened his control.
Three clues changed meaning at once.
Arthur appointing an independent co-trustee.
His written warning about Rebecca being treated as “somebody else’s family.”
His insistence that future descendants receive equal protection regardless of sex.
The major secret was not that Arthur had hidden a fortune for Lily.
He had built legal guardrails because he no longer trusted Evan to define legacy fairly.
Claire looked at Rebecca.
“You protected him.”
Rebecca nodded.
“I thought exposing him would destroy Dad’s faith in him.”
“And what did protecting him do?”
Rebecca’s eyes filled.
“It taught Evan consequences were temporary.”
Claire felt the answer in her chest.
She had done the same thing differently.
Excusing comments.
Explaining behavior.
Keeping peace.
Arthur had done it too.
Everyone had protected Evan from the full cost of smaller betrayals.
Now Lily was paying the accumulated price.
Claire met with her attorney that afternoon.
“I’m filing for separation.”
The attorney nodded.
“Are you sure?”
Claire thought of Lily’s photograph face-down in a box.
“Yes.”
Not because Evan wanted a son.
