Chapter 5 - WHAT ARTHUR SAW BEFORE CLAIRE DID

Miriam’s office overlooked downtown Chicago.
She placed a folder between them.
“Arthur didn’t hate his son.”
Claire nodded.
“I never thought he did.”
“He worried about him.”
“Why?”
Miriam selected an old email.
Evan had sent it to Arthur shortly after Lily’s birth.
One day we’ll get the real heir.
Claire read it twice.
“Maybe he was joking.”
Miriam handed her another.
This one came four years later.
Rebecca says we should stop at one. Easy for her to say. Dad, you know the name has to continue properly.
Then another.
Claire’s stomach tightened.
Evan had repeatedly asked Arthur whether ownership in Mercer Residential Holdings could someday be structured to “keep control on the male line.”
Arthur always refused.
One response was only two sentences.
Lily is a Mercer.
If you ever make her feel otherwise, the problem will not be the trust. It will be you.
Claire lowered the page.
“Why didn’t Arthur tell me?”
“He hoped Evan would grow out of it.”
“Did he?”
Miriam did not answer.
Claire already knew.
Then Miriam explained the burgundy envelope.
Arthur had created two family copies.
One for Claire.
One intended for Lily when she was older.
But near the end of his life, he changed his mind.
“He told me children sometimes notice exclusion before adults are willing to name it.”
Claire looked down.
Arthur had apparently suspected Claire might minimize Evan’s behavior.
That hurt because it was true.
There had been jokes.
Comments.
Disappointment after Claire’s miscarriage two years after Lily was born.
Evan saying, “Maybe next one will stick and be a boy.”
Claire had cried.
Then forgiven him.
She had spent years translating cruelty into family tradition.
Miriam showed her the final provision.
Arthur had appointed an independent co-trustee, Daniel Price.
Not Evan.
Not Rebecca.
Not anyone in the Mercer family.
That meant Evan did not have complete control.
“Why haven’t I heard of Daniel?”
“Because most trust administration happens quietly.”
Claire frowned.
“Has Evan contacted him recently?”
Miriam hesitated.
“I believe so.”
“About what?”
“You need to ask Daniel.”
Claire called from the parking garage.
Daniel answered on the second attempt.
When Claire identified herself, he became very still.
“I’ve been expecting this call.”
“Why?”
“Because Evan requested approval for a restructuring.”
“What restructuring?”
Daniel exhaled.
“He wants to create a separate legacy vehicle for Rebecca’s unborn son.”
Claire felt her stomach turn.
“Using what?”
“Assets connected to the Mercer trust.”
May you like
There it was.
Lily’s bedroom was not the only thing Evan had started moving.
