Chapter 9 - SERENA’S CONFIDENCE CAME FROM SOMEWHERE
Serena’s arrogance in the kitchen kept bothering Madeline.
Even after being caught with the bottle, she smiled.
Even after Madeline confronted her, she struck her.
Even when Preston entered, Serena immediately moved behind him.
Why had she been so certain he would defend her?
Madeline eventually received part of the answer through the legal discovery process and interviews.
Preston had defended Serena for years.
Not romantically.
Habitually.
Whenever Madeline complained:
She’s helping.
Whenever Serena overstepped:
She means well.
Whenever Poppy preferred Serena:
Isn’t it good she loves her?
Whenever Serena criticized Madeline:
You know how blunt she is.
Preston believed he was preventing unnecessary conflict.
Serena interpreted every defense as permission.
Then came one conversation from several months before the hospital.
Madeline had threatened to stop inviting Serena over if she continued undermining bedtime rules.
Preston told Serena privately:
Don’t worry. I won’t let Maddie push you out over something stupid.
The sentence was devastatingly ordinary.
No conspiracy.
No sedative.
No crime.
Just a husband promising another woman that his wife’s boundary would not stand.
Serena remembered it.
Preston barely did.
Madeline did not care which was worse.
That sentence explained the kitchen.
Serena believed Preston would protect her because he always had.
Even when his defense was only an eye roll.
A quiet apology afterward.
A request for Madeline to “let it go.”
Every small surrender taught Serena the same lesson.
Preston would absorb Madeline’s anger so Serena never had to.
Until the hospital.
Until the bottle.
Until Poppy spoke.
Then a second discovery shifted everything again.
Serena had not brought the bottle back to the house after Madeline’s discharge.
Preston had.
Madeline stared at the evidence inventory.
The bottle had been found in a kitchen drawer belonging to their home.
If Serena had used it Sunday and Madeline was hospitalized afterward, how did it end up back inside the Parker house before Wednesday’s confrontation?
Only two adults had access.
