Chapter 8 - MADELINE STOPPED ASKING PRESTON TO CHOOSE
Preston begged Madeline not to file for divorce immediately.
She did not promise anything.
Instead she rented a furnished apartment near Natalie.
Poppy stayed with her.
Preston saw Poppy regularly under arrangements their attorneys helped establish while investigations continued.
Madeline did not try to erase him from their daughter’s life.
That surprised Serena.
According to a message later disclosed during the case, Serena told a friend:
I thought Maddie would take Poppy and disappear. Then Preston would finally see what she’s really like.
Madeline read it twice.
Serena had expected retaliation.
Maybe she needed it.
If Madeline reacted explosively enough, Serena could keep describing her as unstable.
Madeline refused the role.
She returned to therapy.
Followed medical care.
Documented everything.
Went back to the preschool herself.
The director apologized for not contacting her sooner about Serena’s request to change emergency details.
Madeline did not blame the school.
The system had worked.
Staff refused the unauthorized change.
The problem was inside the family.
She removed Serena completely from Poppy’s authorized contacts.
Then she did something emotionally harder.
She told Preston:
“I’m done asking you whether Serena matters more than me.”
His face fell.
“She doesn’t.”
“That isn’t the point.”
“What is?”
“You keep acting like this is a competition you’re supposed to judge.”
Madeline leaned forward.
“I’m your wife. She was our friend. Those were never equal positions until you treated them like they were.”
Preston looked away.
For years he had told Madeline she was jealous whenever she questioned Serena’s involvement.
Madeline finally understood she had been arguing the wrong issue.
She did not need Preston to choose her over Serena.
She needed a husband who understood that outsiders did not get authority over his wife’s body, parenting, or medical decisions.
