Chapter 6 - POPPY HAD HEARD MORE THAN ANYONE REALIZED

Poppy’s therapist advised the adults not to repeatedly question her.

So Madeline stopped.

That was difficult.

Every instinct wanted answers.

Instead Poppy talked when she chose.

One afternoon she was coloring at Natalie’s dining table when she asked:

“Is Aunt Serena mad because you woke up?”

Madeline almost dropped her coffee.

“Why would you think that?”

Poppy shrugged.

“She told Daddy you needed to stay asleep.”

Madeline’s skin prickled.

“When?”

Poppy frowned, trying to remember.

“Before the ambulance.”

That sounded impossible.

Madeline had already been unconscious.

Poppy continued:

“Daddy said, ‘This isn’t what you said would happen.’”

Madeline did not ask another question.

She wrote down Poppy’s exact words and contacted the therapist and investigator.

Later, through properly conducted interviews, a clearer sequence emerged.

Poppy had been coloring in the hallway Sunday night.

She saw Preston hand Serena the bottle earlier.

She later heard raised voices after Madeline became unresponsive.

Preston said something close to:

This isn’t what you said would happen.

Serena responded:

She just needs to stay asleep.

Then Preston called 911.

The phrase changed the case.

Not because it proved a murder plot.

It suggested some kind of prior discussion about making Madeline sleep.

Preston’s attorney advised him to stop giving informal statements.

He complied.

Madeline interpreted that as guilt.

Erin corrected her.

“People can exercise legal rights and still tell the truth later.”

Madeline hated patience.

But patience was becoming necessary.

Then Serena’s attorney offered an explanation.

Serena claimed Preston had directly asked her to give Madeline something so she would sleep through the night.

Serena said she believed he had authority because the medication belonged to him and he was Madeline’s husband.

The explanation was absurd.

But it created the central question.
