Chapter 7 - THE ARGUMENT THEY WANTED MADELINE TO MISS
The answer began with Poppy’s preschool.
Not money.
Not an affair.
Not some hidden inheritance.
A meeting.
Madeline had scheduled a meeting for Monday morning with Poppy’s preschool director.
She had concerns about Serena.
For months Serena had been picking Poppy up occasionally.
Then the director mentioned that Serena had tried to change Poppy’s emergency-contact preferences.
Nothing major had been altered.
Staff refused because Serena was not a parent.
Madeline became furious.
When confronted, Serena insisted she was only trying to make pickup easier.
Madeline told Preston:
“Serena is not picking Poppy up anymore.”
Preston thought Madeline was overreacting.
“She’s practically family.”
“She isn’t Poppy’s parent.”
That disagreement became their biggest argument in months.
Madeline accused Preston of giving Serena too much authority.
Preston accused Madeline of pushing away the people helping them.
The preschool meeting was scheduled for Monday.
Serena knew about it.
So did Preston.
On Sunday afternoon Serena texted Preston:
If she goes in there tomorrow angry, she’s going to blow everything up.
Preston replied:
I know.
Serena:
She needs to calm down and sleep before she does something she regrets.
Preston:
Agreed.
Then Serena asked:
Still have those drops?
Preston answered:
Bathroom cabinet.
That was the exchange.
No explicit instruction.
No command to drug Madeline.
But no innocent request either.
Preston knew exactly which medication Serena meant.
And he knew she wanted Madeline asleep before the meeting.
Madeline stared at the messages during a conference with Erin.
“He knew.”
Erin was careful.
“He knew Serena was proposing something inappropriate involving your medication situation.”
“That’s knowing.”
“It is serious. But we still distinguish what we can prove from what we infer.”
Madeline leaned back.
Preston’s actions began to make sense.
He did not want Madeline hospitalized.
He wanted Monday morning delayed.
He wanted the fight postponed.
He wanted peace.
And he was willing to let Serena violate Madeline’s autonomy to get it.
