Chapter 8 - ELENA FILES BEFORE THE BABY IS BORN
Elena stopped waiting for Victor to explain.
She filed for legal separation.
Not divorce yet.
Maya advised her that pregnancy, shared assets and the ongoing investigation made careful sequencing more useful than dramatic announcements.
Elena also requested protective orders based on the documented pattern and recent violence.
Nothing became permanent in one afternoon.
There were hearings.
Declarations.
Evidence review.
Temporary restrictions.
Rules about communication.
Victor moved out of the Beverly Hills mansion temporarily because Elena had legal access to retrieve her belongings and Eleanor refused to let the property become the center of another violent confrontation.
The house itself did not solve anything.
Elena chose not to live there.
She rented a two-bedroom apartment in West Hollywood.
Smaller kitchen.
No marble.
No chandelier.
She slept better.
The cost was emotional and financial.
Victor’s income had supported the luxury lifestyle.
Elena earned well as a senior interior designer, but not at Vale-family levels.
She cut spending.
Returned a leased luxury SUV.
Bought secondhand nursery furniture from another designer at work.
When Rachel helped carry in a used rocking chair, Elena started crying.
“What?”
Elena wiped her face.
“I think this is the first thing for the baby nobody in that family selected.”
Rachel hugged her.
That night Victor sent a message through attorneys asking to attend the next prenatal appointment.
Elena declined for the moment.
He accused her, through counsel, of using pregnancy to punish him.
Maya answered with documented safety concerns and proposed alternative ways for essential medical information to be shared.
No theatrical victory.
Just boundaries.
The decision spread consequences through the Vale family.
Vale Development’s board learned Victor was involved in a serious domestic matter because he requested indefinite leave and because Eleanor disclosed a potential reputational and governance issue connected to senior leadership.
She did not tell them he was guilty.
She disclosed enough for independent review.
Victor was temporarily removed from active management.
Raul accused Eleanor of destroying the company.
Eleanor replied:
“If the company can only survive by hiding what happens in your living room, it deserves better management.”
Elena did not celebrate Victor losing control at work.
She understood what it meant.
Financial pressure.
Public questions.
Anger.
Possibly more danger.
She tightened her safety plan.
Then Nora called Maya.
She had found something.
A message from Helena sent the afternoon of the attack.
He’s drinking. Keep your camera ready tonight. If Elena starts anything, I want the whole thing.
Nora replied:
What if Victor starts it?
Helena:
Then don’t be stupid about where you point the phone.
