Chapter 11 - THE TWIST DIDN’T GIVE ELENA AN EASY ALLY

Elena wanted to trust Eleanor after that.

She couldn’t.

That complicated everything.

Eleanor had helped her leave.

Paid for temporary security.

Disclosed Victor’s situation to the company board.

But she had also spent years believing family problems deserved intervention only when supported by documentation she considered sufficient.

Paige had paid for that.

Possibly others too.

Elena told her:

“You don’t get to become the good Vale because you showed up once.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I know.”

“I don’t need you saying that either.”

Eleanor almost smiled.

Then stopped.

The immediate damage spread elsewhere.

Raul separated from Helena temporarily.

Not because he became morally outraged.

Because Helena intended to blame him for Victor’s behavior and he refused to carry it.

Nora moved into a hotel.

Victor stopped speaking to her after learning she had preserved full recordings.

Helena called Nora a traitor.

Nora replied:

“You told me to film.”

Helena said:

“I told you to protect your brother.”

The sentence ended whatever loyalty Nora still had.

But Nora’s cooperation was imperfect.

She had deleted two recordings weeks before the attack because Victor begged her.

One might have contained evidence.

Nobody could recover it.

Maya told Elena:

“People who eventually tell the truth still have to answer for what they destroyed before they got there.”

That applied to Nora.

Raul.

Eleanor.

Maybe even Elena.

Elena’s own blind spot was harder to admit.

She had accepted Victor’s apologies because she wanted entry into the Vale life.

Not just Victor.

The restaurants.

The home.

The travel.

The certainty of never worrying about a mortgage.

She had mistaken comfort for safety because admitting the difference would require leaving both.

That did not cause Victor’s violence.

It explained why she had ignored herself longer than she should have.

At a therapy appointment, Elena said:

“I kept waiting for an incident bad enough that nobody could say I was overreacting.”

Her therapist asked:

“Who was the imaginary jury?”

Elena thought of Helena.

Raul.

Nora’s camera.

Victor.

Eleanor.

Maybe everyone.

Then answered:

“Myself.”

That was the damage after the twist.

There was no clean rescuer.

No perfectly innocent witness.

May you like

No family elder who could fix what happened.

Elena would have to build safety without replacing dependence on Victor with dependence on Eleanor.
