Chapter 12 - VICTOR FINALLY SAYS WHAT HE WANTED

The confrontation with Victor happened four months after the night on the marble floor.

Elena was eight months pregnant.

She agreed to a structured settlement conference involving the separation, temporary financial arrangements and safety conditions.

Victor looked thinner.

He had stopped drinking under conditions connected to treatment and his legal strategy, though Elena had no idea whether that would last.

He stared at her stomach.

“You look good.”

Elena said nothing.

Helena was not present.

Neither was Raul.

Victor’s attorney began.

Maya answered.

Numbers.

Living expenses.

Property access.

Medical insurance.

No speeches.

Then Victor asked to speak directly.

Elena agreed.

“I’m sorry.”

She waited.

“For that night.”

“What about the other nights?”

Victor looked irritated.

Then caught himself.

“I’m sorry for all of it.”

“What is all of it?”

“Elena.”

“No. Say one thing.”

He stared at her.

“I shouldn’t have hit you.”

“Good.”

He looked startled by how little the admission changed.

“I’ve admitted it.”

“You admitted a sentence.”

“What do you want from me?”

That was the real question.

Victor still believed accountability was a transaction.

Say enough.

Receive something.

“I want you to explain why you needed me afraid.”

His face changed.

“I didn’t.”

“You blocked doors.”

“You would leave in the middle of arguments.”

“You took my phone.”

“Because you’d call people before we finished.”

“You controlled the car.”

“You drove when you were angry.”

“You hit me.”

Victor looked down.

Finally:

“Because when you walked away, I felt like I didn’t exist.”

Elena said nothing.

He continued.

“Everybody leaves when I stop being useful.”

His father had disappeared emotionally into business.

Raul praised Victor when he performed.

Helena praised him when he represented the family well.

Paige left.

Victor learned control before he learned how to tolerate rejection.

That explained him.

It did not excuse him.

“What did you want that night?” Elena asked.

Victor’s eyes filled.

“For you to stop looking at me like you were already gone.”

“So you hit me.”

“Yes.”

“And Nora filmed because your mother needed proof I was unstable.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you know?”

“June.”

Elena felt the last illusion disappear.

He had known for months.

He could have stopped the filming.

Instead he used it.

Victor whispered:

“I thought if you ever left, I’d need something to prove you weren’t telling the whole story.”

Elena leaned back.

“You mean proof that your abuse was my reaction.”

He said nothing.

That was the emotional meaning of everything.

May you like

Victor had not only hurt her.

He had prepared to use the damage as evidence against her.
