Chapter 7 - THE PATTERN BEFORE THE BABY

Maya did not let Elena chase Paige down emotionally.

They found her properly.

Through counsel.

Paige Dalton was thirty-eight now, married, living in Sacramento.

She agreed to speak voluntarily after learning Elena was pregnant.

Her story did not mirror Elena’s perfectly.

That made it more credible.

Victor had never hit Paige with a cane.

He had punched walls.

Blocked doors.

Destroyed a laptop.

Once grabbed her wrists during an argument.

Paige planned to leave.

Helena intervened.

“She said Victor was under pressure,” Paige told Elena over a lawyer-arranged video call.

“She said he loved hard.”

Elena nearly laughed at the phrase.

“What did she have on you?”

Paige looked embarrassed even after sixteen years.

“Pictures of me drunk at parties. Messages I sent Victor when I was furious. One audio clip where I said I wished his whole family would disappear.”

“Did they threaten you with them?”

“Not exactly.”

That mattered.

Helena was careful.

“She said if I publicly accused Victor, there would be another side to the story.”

Paige eventually signed a settlement related to property Victor had damaged and agreed not to discuss their relationship publicly.

No mysterious payoff.

No criminal cover-up.

Just enough pressure to make silence feel easier.

Paige said one more thing.

“Eleanor found out later.”

Elena looked toward the older woman sitting beside Maya.

Eleanor nodded.

“What did you do?” Elena asked.

“I confronted Raul.”

“Not Victor?”

“He was twenty-two. I thought Raul was responsible for controlling his son.”

“That worked well.”

Eleanor accepted it.

“No. It didn’t.”

Afterward Eleanor pushed for Victor to leave the family company temporarily and undergo counseling.

Victor returned two years later.

Raul promised he had changed.

Everyone moved on.

The family pattern became visible.

Not because everybody actively participated.

Because each person did one small thing.

Helena documented.

Raul minimized.

Eleanor imposed consequences, then accepted reassurance too quickly.

Victor apologized.

The girlfriend disappeared from family conversation.

Years passed.

Then Elena arrived.

That evening Elena looked at Nora’s original video files with Maya.

The unedited clips were longer.

In one, Victor stood in front of a doorway for twelve minutes while Elena repeatedly asked to leave.

Then the edited version began exactly when Elena shoved his chest.

Another captured Helena telling Elena:

“Go ahead. Show everybody how unstable you are.”

The public folder started three seconds later.

A third showed Victor taking Elena’s phone before she threw the wineglass.

The edited version contained only the glass.

The new evidence did not create a different conflict.

It exposed the pattern beneath the same one.

And it made Elena realize something more frightening.

The night Victor used the cane, Nora had not been holding her phone casually.

May you like

She had started recording before Victor entered the room.

Someone had expected a confrontation.
