Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE VANESSA THOUGHT MAISIE WOULD SAVE

Graham asked Vanessa to stay with her sister temporarily.

She refused at first.

“This is my home.”

“It’s also Maisie’s.”

“I know.”

“That’s why I need space.”

Vanessa stared.

“You’re choosing Naomi.”

“No.”

“I’m choosing our daughter.”

“Our?”

Graham caught the word.

Vanessa did too.

He softened slightly.

“You love her.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Of course I do.”

“I believe you.”

She seemed surprised.

Graham continued.

“And you still hurt her.”

That sentence broke through more than accusation had.

Vanessa sat.

“I was afraid.”

“Of Naomi?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“Of being temporary.”

There it was.

She had entered a family whose history began before her.

Graham had loved Naomi.

They shared Maisie.

Every holiday required negotiation.

Every milestone included a woman Vanessa could never fully remove.

She feared being the optional adult.

The second wife.

The stepmother who could love Maisie for years and still have no automatic legal claim if the marriage ended.

Graham finally understood why “live here forever” mattered.

Not because Vanessa wanted a custody victory for its own sake.

She wanted permanence.

She believed if Maisie lived with Graham full-time, then Vanessa’s place in the family would feel permanent too.

Graham shook his head.

“You made a four-year-old responsible for making you feel secure.”

Vanessa cried.

“I didn’t think of it like that.”

“No.”

Graham stood.

“That was the problem.”

She moved to her sister’s house that evening.

Maisie was not told Vanessa was bad.

She was told:

“Vanessa made some grown-up mistakes, and the adults are fixing them.”

Simple.

True.

Enough.
