Chapter 14 - THE APOLOGY MAISIE DIDN’T OWE HER
Six months passed before Vanessa saw Maisie again.
The first meeting happened in the therapist’s office.
Graham attended.
Naomi waited nearby.
Maisie walked in holding the handmade birthday card that had started everything.
Vanessa saw it and immediately began crying.
Maisie looked confused.
The therapist gently guided the conversation.
Vanessa crouched.
“I did something wrong.”
Maisie stared.
“I threw Mommy’s things away.”
Maisie nodded.
“And I told you to say things that weren’t true.”
Another nod.
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“You never have to practice what you say about Mommy again.”
Maisie asked:
“Even if you get sad?”
Vanessa covered her mouth for a moment.
That question revealed everything.
“Yes.”
She forced herself to continue.
“Even if I get sad.”
Maisie thought.
Then:
“Okay.”
No hug.
No instant forgiveness.
Vanessa did not ask.
That was progress.
Afterward Graham asked Maisie how she felt.
“Hungry.”
He almost laughed.
So they went for pancakes.
Normal life returned in pieces.
