Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO HAD HELPED WITHOUT KNOWING IT

Graham wanted Naomi to blame only Vanessa.
Naomi refused.
They met with a co-parenting counselor three days later.
Maisie was not present.
Graham began:
“I didn’t know.”
Naomi looked at him.
“I believe you.”
Relief crossed his face too quickly.
Then Naomi continued.
“But you believed her.”
The relief vanished.
“She was my wife.”
“I was Maisie’s mother.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Graham looked down.
Naomi reminded him.
When he believed she missed picture day, he called furious instead of asking what happened.
When Maisie supposedly said Naomi forgot Christmas presents, Graham told her:
“You need to stop disappointing her.”
When Naomi said FaceTime calls were being blocked, Graham answered:
“Vanessa wouldn’t do that.”
He had not created the manipulation.
He had made it easier.
“Why?” Naomi asked.
Graham struggled.
Finally:
“Because believing you were difficult was easier than believing my marriage had a problem.”
That was honest.
Naomi appreciated it.
She did not forgive it instantly.
The counselor asked Graham whether he had ever talked about modifying custody.
He hesitated.
Naomi’s eyes narrowed.
“When?”
“Two months ago.”
“With Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
Naomi felt her pulse rise.
Graham continued quickly.
“I never filed anything.”
“What did you discuss?”
“More school nights here.”
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa kept saying Maisie was struggling with transitions.”
Naomi stared.
“Was Maisie struggling?”
“I thought she was.”
“Based on what?”
Graham stopped.
Vanessa.
Again.
Naomi leaned back.
The manipulation had almost worked without Vanessa ever filing a single paper.
She had been shaping the story Graham might eventually tell in court.

Not with one dramatic lie.
With dozens of small ones.
