Chapter 7 - THE DRAWING WITH ONE HOUSE

Maisie’s therapist noticed the drawing.

One large house.

Three people.

Daddy.

Vanessa.

Maisie.

Naomi was not there.

The therapist did not interpret it immediately.

Children omitted people from drawings all the time.

But she asked:

“Where does Mommy live?”

Maisie pointed outside the page.

“Far away.”

Naomi lived twelve minutes from Graham.

“Why far away?”

Maisie shrugged.

“Vanessa says Mommy has her other life.”

Naomi’s hands went cold when the therapist later summarized the concern appropriately.

Another phrase.

Other life.

Naomi remembered Maisie asking:

“Do you like your friends more than me?”

She had laughed gently then.

“Of course not.”

Now she knew where the question came from.

Graham heard the same information.

He went home and opened a hall cabinet.

Inside was a stack of Maisie’s drawings.

Vanessa saved nearly everything she made.

That had always seemed loving.

Then Graham noticed something.

Pictures containing Naomi were folded separately.

Some faced backward.

One had Naomi’s figure cut away from the edge.

Graham stared at it.

Vanessa entered.

“What are you doing?”

He held up the drawing.

“Who cut this?”

Vanessa stopped.

“It tore.”

“Perfectly around Naomi?”

No answer.

Graham pulled out another.

Naomi’s name had been scribbled over.

“Maisie did that?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“She was angry.”

“At four?”

“She has feelings.”

“Who told her what to be angry about?”

Vanessa’s expression became cold.

“You’re blaming me because your ex-wife can’t accept that Maisie has another family.”

Graham stood.

“No.”

He gathered the drawings.

“I’m blaming you because you keep telling a child she has to choose which family is real.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You think Naomi hasn’t been doing the same thing?”

Graham stopped.

“What has Naomi done?”

Vanessa’s smile returned.

“Ask her why Maisie started calling me Mom before I ever told her to.”

And for the first time since the trash bag, Graham encountered a detail that did not fit the simple version of the story.
