Chapter 4 - THE CUSTODY FIGHT GRAHAM DIDN’T KNOW HAD STARTED

Naomi called her family-law attorney the next morning.
Not to demand emergency full custody.
To understand what mattered.
Her attorney listened carefully.
“Do not coach Maisie in the opposite direction.”
“I wouldn’t.”
“Do not make her repeat statements for relatives.”
“I won’t.”
“Document what you personally observed.”
Naomi wrote down the family-room incident.
The unopened gifts.
The exact words she remembered hearing.
Nothing more.
Meanwhile, Graham began doing the same thing on his side.
He searched old messages with Naomi.
A disturbing pattern emerged.
Three months earlier:
GRAHAM: Maisie says you forgot picture day.
NAOMI: I was never told the school changed it.
Vanessa had been the parent copied on the update.
Six weeks earlier:
GRAHAM: She says you never called Sunday.
NAOMI: I called four times.
Vanessa had told Graham Maisie was already asleep.
Then Graham found something worse.
A draft email on their shared household tablet.
Vanessa had written it but never sent it.
Subject:
PARENTING SCHEDULE CONCERNS.
It listed examples of Naomi supposedly being “emotionally inconsistent.”
Missed school event.
Missed Sunday call.
Missing birthday gift.
Every incident now looked compromised.
Graham confronted Vanessa.
“You were building a list?”
She did not deny it.
“I was documenting.”
“For what?”
“In case you needed it.”
“Needed it for what?”
Vanessa stared.
“To protect your daughter.”
“From Naomi?”
“From instability.”
Graham’s jaw tightened.
“Naomi has never threatened Maisie.”
“She doesn’t have to.”
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She’s already made Maisie feel unwanted.”
Graham pointed toward the gifts he had placed on the dining table.
“You hid the proof that she didn’t.”
For the first time, Vanessa lost her composure.
“Because every time Naomi shows up, you forget who your family is now.”
Graham froze.
There it was.
