Chapter 9 - The Family Takes Sides

Grant invited the family to his house the following Sunday.

Rachel did not go.

I almost declined, but Maya advised me to listen rather than argue. Tyler had been speaking for weeks. We needed to know what he was saying.

Grant served grilled chicken on paper plates beneath the covered patio. Nobody ate much.

Tyler sat beside Evan and described himself as a frightened father whose wife had become unpredictable after childbirth. He admitted locking the car but claimed it lasted “less than a minute” and was meant to stop Rachel from driving away while hysterical.

Carol’s statement already contradicted him. She had heard the horn for nearly nine minutes before I arrived.

Tyler called her an attention seeker.

“What about the formula?” I asked.

“Rachel mixed it.”

“The feeding log says you handled the night bottles.”

“She wrote whatever made her look good.”

“What about the clinic calls?”

“I was trying to get help.”

He had an answer for every fact because he had arranged the facts before we knew they mattered.

Grant turned to me.

“You fed him all that information about Rachel. Now you’re acting innocent.”

The accusation was cruel because it was partly true.

“I made a mistake,” I said. “Tyler turned it into a weapon.”

Evan finally looked at his brother-in-law.

“Did Vanessa live there before Rachel went to the hospital?”

Tyler wiped barbecue sauce from his thumb.

“She was helping.”

“Were you sleeping with her?”

Grant pushed his plate away. “That isn’t relevant to whether Rachel is well.”

“It’s relevant to why she wanted out,” Evan said.

Tyler stood.

“This family is letting Diane’s guilt destroy Lily’s home.”

My guilt.

Not his locked car.

Not the dehydrated baby.

My guilt.

Evan’s expression changed. He had defended Tyler because he trusted organized explanations. Now he was hearing the organization itself.

Before Tyler left, he warned Grant that anyone supporting Rachel might lose access to Lily once he won custody.

He didn’t say if.

He said once.

That evening, Evan sent Rachel a message apologizing for believing the petition.

She did not answer.

An hour later, Maya called.

Vanessa had contacted her office.

She wanted to discuss what Tyler had told her before the driveway.
