Chapter 14 - The Last Offer

The courthouse conference room overlooked downtown Phoenix, though nobody looked out the window.
Tyler arrived in a navy suit with Grant beside him. Vanessa waited in another room under subpoena. Carol and the pediatric dietitian sat down the hall.
Before the hearing began, the judge gave both sides one final opportunity to reach temporary terms.
Tyler’s attorney offered to accept supervised visitation if Rachel withdrew the allegation that he had intentionally endangered Lily.
Maya turned to Rachel.
“The decision is yours.”
Tyler spoke before Rachel could answer.
“You know I’d never hurt my daughter.”
Rachel looked at him for several seconds.
“You kept calling her your daughter when you wanted control. You called her the baby when she needed help.”
“That’s not evidence.”
“No,” Rachel said. “It’s just the part I finally understand.”
Grant asked for five minutes alone with his son.
Tyler refused.
Then he looked at me.
“This started because Diane couldn’t stay out of our marriage.”
Months earlier, that accusation would have pushed me into defending myself. Instead, I answered the question beneath it.
“I gave you information I had no right to give. I’ll say that under oath.”
Rachel’s eyes moved toward me.
Tyler shook his head. “You’ll destroy your relationship with her.”
“That part is already damaged.”
My testimony would expose my arrogance, my interference, and the private details I had shared. Keeping those messages out might protect my reputation.
It would also allow Tyler to claim they were taken out of context.
Rachel did not ask me to sacrifice myself.
She simply waited to see whether I would choose truth without being managed.
I told Maya to enter the full message chain.
Tyler’s attorney whispered urgently to him.
The judge’s clerk opened the courtroom door.
Tyler could still accept supervised contact and treatment without contesting the evidence. He could begin the long work of becoming safe.
Instead, he straightened his jacket.
“My wife is unstable,” he said. “I’m not agreeing to a lie.”
The clerk called the case.

Rachel lifted Lily’s carrier.
The offer disappeared behind us as we entered the courtroom.
