Chapter 5 - The Help That Wasn’t Help

The hospital dietitian placed both formula scoops on a paper towel.

“They are not interchangeable,” she said.

Rachel sat in a wheelchair beside Lily’s crib. I stood behind her while the pediatrician explained that using the smaller scoop with the larger amount of water could produce dangerously diluted formula.

No one claimed yet that it had been intentional.

But the feeding log showed a pattern.

On nights Rachel recorded the bottles, Lily took the recommended amount and had normal wet diapers. On nights Tyler recorded them, the amounts looked similar, yet Lily became harder to wake and produced fewer wet diapers the following day.

“He told me sleepy babies were full babies,” Rachel said.

The pediatrician’s face stayed carefully neutral. “Extreme sleepiness in a newborn needs evaluation.”

“I called the office.”

The nurse checked the chart. “There’s no call from your number.”

“Tyler said he called for me.”

The doctor turned to the computer.

Tyler had contacted the clinic four times. Each time, he described Rachel as confused, emotional, or unable to follow instructions. He reported that Rachel was preparing bottles incorrectly.

He never reported Lily’s lethargy.

Rachel stared at the screen.

“He kept taking the bottle out of my hand,” she said. “He’d pour it away and say I couldn’t even feed my own baby.”

A memory surfaced from the week after Lily’s birth. I had visited and found Rachel crying in the kitchen while Tyler washed bottles.

He told me she had mixed one wrong.

I had taken her upstairs and encouraged her to sleep.

I had praised Tyler for stepping up.

“What else did he say?” the DCS worker asked.

Rachel rubbed the edge of Lily’s blanket between her fingers.

“He said if I left him, nobody would trust me alone with her. He said he’d already made sure of that.”

The DCS worker stopped writing.

“Made sure how?”

Rachel looked at me.

“That’s what I don’t know.”

Then she asked a question that made the hospital room feel smaller.

“Mom, what did you tell him about me?”
