Chapter 10 - The Woman He Had Promised a Family

Vanessa met Maya at a conference room in downtown Phoenix with her own lawyer present.
Rachel attended by video. I was not invited, but Rachel told me what happened afterward because the truth involved me too.
Vanessa did not ask forgiveness.
She began with the formula.
Tyler had told her Rachel was deliberately underfeeding Lily to punish him. He showed Vanessa selected pages from the feeding log and my messages about Rachel’s anxiety.
He said he needed Vanessa to witness Rachel’s behavior because nobody would believe a husband fighting for custody against an unstable wife.
Vanessa wanted to believe him.
She had been involved with Tyler since Rachel’s sixth month of pregnancy. Tyler told her the marriage was over and Rachel refused to accept it. He promised Vanessa that once Rachel received inpatient treatment, Vanessa could move into the house and help him raise Lily.
“What did you think would happen in the car?” Maya asked.
Vanessa stared at her hands.
“He said we’d lock the doors for a few seconds. He said Rachel would start screaming and prove she couldn’t regulate herself.”
“You put a newborn in that car.”
“I thought the engine was running.”
Rachel leaned toward the screen. “You shut Lily’s door.”
Vanessa’s voice dropped. “Yes.”
When Rachel began pounding on the glass, Vanessa told Tyler to unlock it. He switched off the engine, pocketed the key, and said, “Let her show us who she really is.”
Vanessa still did not call for help.
She remained beside him until I arrived.
Then she revealed the detail that changed the entire feeding investigation.
She had never prepared Lily’s formula.
Tyler asked her to stand in the kitchen twice while he made bottles so he could later say she had supervised Rachel. Vanessa had seen him use the yellow scoop. When she said it belonged to the other can, Tyler answered, “It keeps her full without wasting powder.”
Vanessa knew that was wrong.
She told herself he was cheap, not dangerous.
Tyler had manipulated Vanessa, but he had not controlled her hands when she closed the car door. She had chosen him repeatedly because each choice made the previous one harder to admit.
Her statement connected the night feedings, the clinic reports, the photographs, my messages, and the driveway.
Tyler was not reacting to Rachel’s instability.
He was manufacturing it.
Maya asked whether Rachel wanted to use Vanessa as a cooperating witness.
Rachel closed her eyes.
Accepting her help would strengthen the case.
It would also place the woman who had helped endanger Lily inside every future hearing.

Rachel opened her eyes again.
“Use the truth,” she said. “I don’t have to trust the person carrying it.”
