Chapter 9 - THE CONVERSATION AT THE MARINA
Daniel’s original team had followed Evelyn because Lucas suspected she was meeting someone connected to Ashbourne Advisory.
Two weeks before Rachel fell, Evelyn met Nathan Briggs at a marina restaurant in Norwalk.
Daniel’s investigator sat three tables away.
The conversation wasn’t secretly recorded with spy equipment. Connecticut law complicated that, and Daniel had never authorized anything illegal.
Instead, Maya had written contemporaneous observation notes afterward.
Certain phrases stayed with her because Evelyn spoke loudly when angry.
One of them was:
“She has no idea what her signature controls.”
Rachel frowned.
“My signature?”
Hannah looked at Lucas.
He seemed equally confused.
The investigation shifted back toward finances.
Rachel reviewed trust documents she had worked on after Harold’s death.
Her name appeared in one place she had forgotten.
Harold Morgan had created a charitable housing foundation five years before his death. Rachel, because of her accounting background and because Harold trusted her judgment, had been named successor financial overseer if both Harold and Evelyn became unable or unwilling to serve.
After Harold died, Evelyn remained chair.
Rachel’s role seemed dormant.
It wasn’t.
Certain large related-party transactions required acknowledgment by an independent overseer.
Rachel had never provided it.
Yet three Ashbourne transfers exceeding $100,000 had gone through.
Someone had entered approvals under her name.
Rachel stared at the transaction reports.
“These aren’t mine.”
Lucas looked physically ill.
Evelyn had not merely moved questionable money from a family trust.
She had used Rachel’s identity to make some of those transfers appear reviewed.
Suddenly the stakes changed.
Rachel wasn’t dangerous because she had persuaded Lucas to investigate.
Rachel was dangerous because once she examined the records closely, she could prove approvals attributed to her were false.
Hannah asked the obvious question.
“Did Evelyn know you were reviewing the foundation records before the fall?”
Rachel remembered the blue accordion folder she had carried to Rowayton.
She had brought it because she planned to work Sunday morning.
After the fall, the folder disappeared.
Lucas said he assumed hospital staff or relatives packed it with her belongings.
Nobody had found it.
Daniel looked at his notes from the hospital attack.
Evelyn’s words returned with different weight.
This ends before anyone comes back.
Rachel finally understood.
