Chapter 5 - THE MONEY BEHIND THE FAMILY
The financial truth appeared before the physical one.
Lucas came to the hospital the following Saturday with Hannah present.
Rachel wanted a witness.
He accepted that without complaint.
“Why did you lie about the balcony repair?”
Lucas stared at the floor.
“Because I panicked.”
“Try again.”
His jaw tightened.
“When you fell, I knew the contractor had repaired it. If I told police that, they would immediately ask why it failed.”
“Which seems useful.”
“And then they would ask why I hired investigators to look into my mother.”
“Also useful.”
“Not to the company.”
Rachel understood.
Morgan Residential Group employed 184 people across Connecticut and New York. A scandal involving the founder’s widow, trust assets, and a suspicious injury at the family estate could freeze financing and terrify lenders.
Lucas had chosen corporate stability over immediate transparency.
“You let them call my fall an accident to protect the company.”
“For forty-eight hours.”
“For three weeks.”
He had no answer.
Then he told her what Daniel’s original investigation had uncovered.
Over fourteen months, approximately $610,000 had moved from a family trust into payments to a vendor called Ashbourne Advisory.
Ashbourne had no employees.
Its mailing address was a mailbox in Greenwich.
The company was controlled by Evelyn.
Rachel felt almost no surprise.
“Why?”
“Mom says Dad promised her money outside the estate plan.”
“Did he?”
“There’s no documentation.”
Lucas had begun questioning the transfers internally.
Evelyn accused Rachel.
She believed Rachel had convinced Lucas to restrict her access.
“Did you tell her I found the reimbursements?”
Lucas’s silence answered.
Rachel looked at him.
“You used me.”
“I told her you had noticed them because I thought if she knew an independent accountant had seen it, she’d stop.”
“Instead she decided I was the threat.”
Lucas’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know she would—”
“Stop telling me what you didn’t know.”
Rachel’s voice remained quiet.
“Tell me what you did know.”
Lucas admitted Evelyn had called Rachel a parasite.
He admitted she had told him to divorce Rachel before Rachel “destroyed the family.”
He admitted that six weeks before the fall, Evelyn said something he dismissed as melodrama:
“Some problems disappear if you stop protecting them.”
Lucas had hired Daniel the next morning.
Rachel felt something inside her relationship break with almost no sound.
