Chapter 14 - THE LAST OFFER

Evelyn asked to speak to Lucas before the charging decision became public.

Lucas refused unless Rachel agreed to a structured meeting with attorneys present.

Rachel almost declined.

Then she decided she wanted one question answered while Evelyn still believed an answer might change something.

They met at Hannah’s office.

Evelyn arrived fifteen minutes late.

Rachel arrived with a cane.

That seemed to bother Evelyn.

Not because Rachel looked weak.

Because she was walking.

Evelyn sat across from them.

Her attorney explained that she was not admitting criminal responsibility and would not discuss the physical mechanics of the balcony.

Hannah nodded.

“Then Rachel has one non-technical question.”

Rachel looked at Evelyn.

“When did you decide I was disposable?”

Lucas turned toward her.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“That is melodramatic.”

“No. It’s very simple.”

Rachel rested both hands on the cane.

“Before I found the Ashbourne payments? After Lucas hired Daniel? When you took the blue folder? When you came into my hospital room with the pillow?”

Evelyn looked away.

“You were destroying everything Harold built.”

“By asking where money went.”

“By teaching my son to distrust his own mother.”

Lucas spoke quietly.

“Rachel didn’t teach me that.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“You would choose her after everything?”

Lucas’s answer came slowly.

“I should have chosen the truth before anyone had to ask me.”

Rachel felt the sentence more deeply than she wanted to.

Evelyn did too.

Her face hardened.

“You’re both going to regret this when the company collapses.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Maybe it survives. Maybe it doesn’t. But I’m done being told that keeping your family comfortable is worth more than keeping me alive.”

Hannah ended the meeting.

Evelyn stood.

At the door she turned toward Lucas.

For one second Rachel thought she might finally apologize.

Instead she said, “Your father would be ashamed of you.”

Lucas looked at her without moving.

“Then he can be.”

Evelyn left.

The following morning, the prosecutor’s office formally moved forward.

Whatever story the Morgans told at dinner tables after that would no longer determine what happened next.
