Chapter 11 - THE DAMAGE LUCAS COULDN’T UNDO
The twist destroyed Lucas’s remaining defense.
He had spent weeks telling himself he could not have predicted violence.
Now even he stopped saying it.
“I should have told you the day I saw your name.”
Rachel didn’t answer.
“I should have removed Mom’s access to the house.”
Still nothing.
“I should have told the board.”
Rachel finally looked at him.
“You keep listing business decisions.”
Lucas flinched.
“I should have told my wife she might be in danger.”
“Yes.”
He cried then.
Quietly.
Rachel did not comfort him.
She loved him enough for that to hurt.
The outside review confirmed that more than $1.1 million had passed through Ashbourne Advisory and related reimbursements over three years. Some payments might ultimately prove legitimate expenses Evelyn believed she was entitled to. Others had no obvious supporting documentation.
Rachel refused to call all of it theft before professionals completed the review.
That mattered to her.
Evidence had nearly killed her.
She would not misuse it now.
Nathan Briggs’s attorney began negotiating his cooperation with investigators. Nathan admitted replacing the balcony bolts at Evelyn’s direction despite knowing they were inadequate.
He denied knowing she wanted Rachel hurt.
Whether prosecutors believed that would take time.
Hospital staff provided their records.
Daniel provided the recording of Evelyn’s threats.
The blue folder became important but not magical. Evelyn’s possession of it after the fall did not alone prove she caused the fall.
It did prove she had taken material directly connected to the disputed approvals.
Lucas faced his own consequences.
Morgan Residential’s board placed him on leave because he had withheld relevant information from directors after Rachel’s fall.
Benjamin called him a coward.
Natalie called him worse.
Rachel said almost nothing.
The hardest realization was not that Lucas had failed.
It was that Rachel had contributed to their marriage’s pattern too.
Lucas hid difficult truths.
Rachel often accepted partial answers because she valued calm.
She had noticed his secrecy for months and decided not to push because his father had recently died.
Compassion had become avoidance.
That did not make her responsible for Evelyn.
