Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF HIS SILENCE
Lucas’s admission changed the family overnight.
Natalie stopped allowing him into Rachel’s room unless Rachel specifically agreed.
Lucas’s younger brother, Benjamin, accused Rachel of turning a private financial dispute into “a criminal family circus.”
Evelyn’s sister called from Palm Beach to say Rachel had always been ambitious.
Rachel hung up before hearing ambitious about what.
The company board became involved after Lucas disclosed the disputed trust payments and his private investigation.
He voluntarily stepped back from overseeing company finances during an outside review.
That cost him professionally.
Rachel did not feel guilty.
What she did feel was something more complicated.
Lucas had lied to protect the company, but once forced into daylight, he stopped protecting Evelyn.
He gave investigators complete access to his emails.
He waived privilege over portions of Daniel’s original investigation that concerned Rachel’s safety.
He turned over trust ledgers.
He admitted his own misleading statements to police.
None of that repaired what he had done.
It did change the direction of his loyalty.
Evelyn sensed it too.
Through her attorney, she denied wrongdoing and characterized the hospital confrontation as an argument distorted by Rachel’s trauma medication.
The recorder made that difficult.
Her attorney then shifted.
Evelyn had been distressed.
The pillow had been misunderstood.
Rachel’s kick proved Rachel was physically aggressive.
Hannah read the statement aloud at Rachel’s bedside.
Rachel almost smiled.
“She’s still doing it.”
“Doing what?”
“Making my reaction the event.”
The investigators kept working.
Then Ethan Ross found something that changed the timeline.
Evelyn’s hardware-store receipt showed the screws had been purchased four days before the fall.
But phone-location records voluntarily provided through Evelyn’s civil discovery response later showed she had been at a charity luncheon in Manhattan at the time.
Someone else had used her card.
The cashier remembered a man.
Daniel placed the receipt photograph beside a list of people connected to the Morgan estate.
“If Evelyn didn’t buy those screws herself,” he said, “then somebody helped her.”
Rachel’s first thought was Lucas.
