Chapter 9 - The Investigation Reached Ryan’s Childhood

Lena asked Ryan a question nobody else had.

“How were you disciplined growing up?”

According to the written summary his attorney later allowed to be shared, Ryan initially answered:

“Strictly.”

Then Lena asked him to define strictly.

Ryan stopped cooperating.

That reaction mattered.

Carol gave a different answer.

“Ryan needed structure.”

She described him as difficult.

Emotional.

Oversensitive.

The same words she used for Caleb.

Megan sat in Rachel’s office reading the interview summary.

A memory surfaced.

Years earlier, at a Christmas dinner, Ryan’s uncle had joked that Carol could “make a kid stop crying with one look.”

Everyone laughed.

Ryan didn’t.

Megan had forgotten that.

She called Ryan’s older cousin, Mark, who had grown up nearby.

She did not ask him to investigate.

She asked one question.

“Was Carol physical with Ryan when they were kids?”

Mark went silent.

Then said, “You really don’t know?”

Megan’s skin turned cold.

Ryan had spent childhood being struck for crying, made to stand for long periods as punishment, and humiliated whenever he showed fear.

Mark remembered one summer when Ryan stayed with his family for two weeks after a punishment frightened him badly enough to run from home.

No police report.

No dramatic intervention.

It was the early 1990s.

Adults called it “strict parenting.”

Megan felt sick.

Not because it excused Ryan.

Because it explained the freeze in the kitchen.

When Ryan saw Carol standing over Caleb, some part of him had recognized the scene instantly.

He knew exactly what his mother could do.

He had known before he ever left Caleb alone with her.

The question was no longer whether Ryan underestimated Carol.

It was why a man who survived her had invited her methods into his son’s life.
