Chapter 12 - The Mother Who Called Abuse Love

The confrontation with Carol happened during a structured family meeting.
Not in Megan’s house.
Not alone.
A facilitator sat between them.
Ryan attended separately.
Carol remained defiant.
“I never abused that child.”
Megan looked at her.
“You hit him.”
“I disciplined him.”
“You poured dirty water over him.”
“He was throwing a fit.”
“You called him weak and stupid.”
“He needs to hear the truth sometimes.”
Ryan flinched.
Carol noticed.
“There. That face. That’s exactly the problem.”
The facilitator interrupted.
“Carol, speak about Caleb, not Ryan.”
But the damage was useful.
For the first time Megan saw the system operating in real time.
Carol wasn’t merely cruel to Caleb.
She still controlled Ryan with the same contempt.
“You made me strong,” Ryan said quietly.
Carol leaned back.
“You’re welcome.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“No.”
Carol frowned.
“I spent thirty years saying that because the other answer was harder.”
“What other answer?”
“That I was afraid of you.”
Carol stared at him.
Megan said nothing.
Ryan continued.
“And when Caleb got scared at school, I sent him to you because I didn’t know how to help him without becoming you.”
Carol scoffed.
“You’re blaming your mother because your kid is soft?”
Ryan closed his eyes.
Then opened them.
“No. I’m blaming myself because I knew what you were.”
Carol’s composure cracked.
“You begged me to help!”
“I did.”
He nodded.
“That’s the part I have to live with.”
For the first time, Ryan was not hiding behind misunderstanding.

He had asked Carol to reproduce the thing that harmed him.
And she had done exactly that.
