Chapter 6 - The Marriage Moved Out Without Him
Megan told Ryan she and Caleb would not return home while Carol had access to the house.
Ryan offered to make Carol leave.
Megan still refused.
“This isn’t just about her.”
“Megan.”
“You knew.”
“I didn’t know today would happen.”
“You knew enough to lie about the bruise.”
Ryan had no answer.
The practical consequences arrived immediately.
Caleb needed clothes.
School transportation changed.
Megan’s commute doubled.
Allison rearranged her own children’s schedules so someone could meet Caleb’s bus.
Megan hated depending on her sister.
Then she realized how absurd that feeling was.
Healthy families were supposed to inconvenience themselves for one another sometimes.
Carol called twice.
Megan blocked her.
Ryan’s calls remained unblocked because of Caleb.
He began asking to see his son.
Megan referred him to the temporary safety arrangement being discussed with CPS and their lawyers.
Ryan accused her of punishing him.
That night, Caleb overheard.
“I can see Dad if you want.”
Megan sat beside him.
“This isn’t about what I want.”
“He’ll be lonely.”
Megan nearly cried.
Even frightened, Caleb was worrying about the adult who failed him.
“Dad’s feelings are Dad’s job.”
Caleb considered that.
Then asked, “Is Grandma’s anger her job too?”
“Yes.”
That answer seemed to surprise him.
Two days later Lena Brooks visited Allison’s home.
She spoke with Megan.
Then privately with Caleb using age-appropriate questions.
Afterward, Lena asked Megan whether Ryan had ever been physically aggressive with Caleb.
“No.”
“With you?”
Megan hesitated.
“No.”
“Has he ever minimized his mother’s behavior?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Megan stared at her hands.
“I didn’t realize that was what he was doing.”
There it was.
Her own failure.
Megan had recognized Carol’s cruelty for years.
She simply believed Ryan’s discomfort meant disagreement.
