Chapter 1 - The Permission Caleb Should Never Have Needed

Megan heard Caleb crying before she reached the kitchen.
She rounded the doorway and stopped.
Her six-year-old son was trapped against the counter, sobbing so hard he could barely breathe. Orange juice covered the floor. A chair lay on its side. Plastic dishes were scattered around his sneakers.
Carol stood over him.
Before Megan could speak, her mother-in-law slammed another pile of dirty plastic dishes down over Caleb’s head and shoulders.
“SCREAM LOUDER.”
Then Carol tipped a container of filthy dishwater over him.
Caleb squeezed his eyes shut.
Carol smiled.
“MY WEAK, STUPID GRANDSON.”
Her foot struck him once before Megan reached her.
“GET AWAY FROM HIM, YOU OLD HAG.”
Megan shoved Carol backward.
The older woman crashed into a padded kitchen chair.
Megan immediately turned away from her and pulled Caleb behind her.
That was when Ryan appeared in the doorway.
He took one step into the kitchen.
Then stopped.
Megan expected him to rush toward Caleb.
He didn’t.
He looked at his mother.
Then at the mess.
Then at his son.
Caleb slowly lifted his face.
His whole body was trembling.
“GRANDMA SAID DAD GAVE HER PERMISSION TO HIT ME LIKE THIS, MOM.”
Nobody moved.
Ryan’s face went pale.
Carol’s smile disappeared.
Megan turned toward her husband.
“Ryan?”
He looked at the floor.
That was worse than a denial.
Caleb buried both hands in Megan’s denim jacket.
She could feel his fingers shaking through the fabric.
Megan had a hundred questions.
She asked only one.
“Has she done this before?”
Ryan’s head came up.
Carol spoke first.
“He’s confused.”
Megan looked at her son.
Caleb was staring at his father.
Not Carol.
His father.
And in that frightened little face, Megan saw something she had somehow missed for months.

Caleb wasn’t waiting for Ryan to defend him.
He was waiting to see whether Ryan would lie again.
