Chapter 3 - The Bruise Megan Had Believed

Megan did not interrogate him.

Every instinct demanded answers immediately.

Instead, she called Caleb’s pediatrician.

Dr. Shah advised her to bring Caleb in that evening.

He documented the fading bruise, checked the areas Carol had struck that afternoon, and found no serious injury.

Then he asked Caleb simple questions without Megan prompting him.

Caleb stared at the paper covering the examination table.

“Grandma gets mad when I cry.”

“How often does that happen?”

Caleb shrugged.

“Sometimes.”

“Does she ever hurt you when she gets mad?”

Caleb looked toward Megan.

She said nothing.

Eventually he nodded.

Dr. Shah did not press for graphic details.

He explained to Megan afterward that, as a mandated reporter, he needed to notify child protective services.

Megan felt sick even though she knew it was necessary.

On the drive back, she remembered the bruise.

Ryan had been the one who noticed it first.

“Playground,” he had said casually.

Caleb had been standing beside him.

Megan remembered asking, “That right, buddy?”

Caleb nodded.

Ryan put a hand on his shoulder.

At the time, Megan saw reassurance.

Now she remembered how Caleb’s body had gone stiff beneath his father’s hand.

At Allison’s kitchen table that night, Megan finally opened the family calendar.

Carol watched Caleb most Wednesdays because Megan worked late supervising inventory at a medical-supply company.

Ryan usually picked him up around six.

Megan started comparing dates.

The bruise appeared after a Wednesday.

So had Caleb’s sudden refusal to eat dinner two weeks earlier.

So had the night he wet the bed for the first time in years.

So had three mornings when he begged not to go to school because, he claimed, his stomach hurt.

Megan had blamed first grade.

New teacher.

New schedule.

Normal adjustment.

At 10:41 p.m., Ryan texted.

Mom went too far today. I admit that. But don’t destroy our family over one mistake.

Megan stared at the message.

One mistake.

She typed back.

What happened last time?

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Returned.

May you like

Then vanished completely.

Ryan never answered.
