Chapter 7 - The Accusation Was a Distraction
Claire reconstructed the afternoon carefully.
Sophie entered.
Her phone accidentally started recording.
Derek and Vanessa discussed using Claire’s authority.
Vanessa noticed Sophie.
Then Sophie damaged the dress.
Within minutes, Vanessa shifted every adult’s attention toward the torn fabric.
Ten thousand dollars.
A brat.
A careless child.
Derek joined immediately.
Claire had thought he was defending his mistress because he was selfish.
That was true.
But incomplete.
He was also helping turn Sophie from witness into offender.
If Sophie became “the child who destroyed Vanessa’s dress,” anything she said afterward could be dismissed as lying to avoid punishment.
Claire hated how logical it was.
She called Maya again.
“Did Derek ever mention Sophie hearing business conversations?”
“No.”
“Did Vanessa?”
Maya hesitated.
“Yesterday she asked whether anything discussed inside Derek’s home office could be considered confidential if a family member overheard it.”
Claire closed her eyes.
There it was.
Vanessa was preparing.
So Claire prepared too.
She copied Sophie’s original phone file exactly as it existed and gave the device to her attorney for preservation.
No edits.
No social-media posts.
No dramatic threats.
The evidence would survive because Claire stopped treating the situation like a marriage argument.
That evening Derek left a voicemail.
“Claire, whatever you think you heard, you’re wrong about Vanessa.”
