Chapter 4 - Claire Closed the First Door

Claire did not confront Derek again.

She called the bank.

Then she called an attorney.

By six that evening, the lender had placed the pending amendment under internal review.

No new money would be released until Claire’s authorization was independently verified.

Claire also sent written notice revoking any authority Derek claimed to exercise in her name.

The effect was immediate.

Derek started calling.

She ignored him.

Then Vanessa called.

Claire ignored her too.

At seven, Derek began pounding on the upstairs bedroom door.

“Claire, we need to talk.”

She remained beside Sophie.

“No.”

“You’re destroying twenty-three people’s jobs.”

Claire walked to the door but did not unlock it.

“You forged my signature.”

Silence.

Then Derek lowered his voice.

“It wasn’t like that.”

“What was it like?”

“We were fixing a temporary liquidity issue.”

“With my name.”

“I knew you would’ve approved it.”

Claire almost laughed.

“You didn’t ask because you knew I wouldn’t.”

Derek struck the door once with the flat of his hand.

Not hard enough to break it.

Hard enough for Sophie to flinch.

Claire noticed.

That ended the conversation.

She called her sister, Nora, and asked whether Sophie could stay there.

Derek heard the call through the door.

“You are not taking my daughter.”

Claire answered through the wood.

“She’s afraid of you.”

That stopped him.

Not because he accepted it.

May you like

Because Sophie heard it too.

And Claire was done teaching her daughter that fear had to remain unnamed to keep a family together.
