Chapter 15 - The Person Sophie Needed Her Mother to Be

Halston BuildWorks survived.

Smaller.

Poorer.

Changed.

Peterson took controlling authority under the restructuring.

Several projects were sold to competitors.

Three employees left voluntarily.

Others stayed.

Derek remained a minority owner but no longer controlled company finances.

Vanessa’s consulting contract was terminated through a negotiated settlement far below what she expected from the failed sale.

Claire’s disputed authorization was formally removed.

The lender released her from future company borrowing authority after the existing guarantee issues were addressed through the marital settlement.

The divorce itself would take time.

So would property division.

So would Sophie.

Derek began counseling and parenting sessions.

For six weeks Sophie refused to see him.

Then she agreed to one supervised visit.

Twenty minutes.

Claire sat in the building lobby while they met with a therapist.

When Sophie came out, she carried a drawing.

Claire did not ask what they discussed.

On the drive home Sophie eventually said, “Dad said the dress wasn’t my fault.”

Claire tightened her hands slightly on the steering wheel.

“What did you say?”

“I told him I already knew.”

Claire looked at her daughter in the rearview mirror.

There was the victory.

Not bankruptcy.

Not Vanessa losing money.

Not Derek losing control of the company.

An eight-year-old no longer believing adult cruelty proved something was wrong with her.

At home, Sophie’s small phone sat charging on the kitchen counter.

Claire had considered replacing it.

Instead she kept it.

Not as evidence anymore.

Just Sophie’s phone.

That evening Derek sent Claire a message.

Her therapist says she might be willing to have dinner with me next month if she chooses the place. I won’t ask her directly. Can you tell me if she brings it up?

Claire read it.

Months earlier, Derek would have demanded.

Now he was asking permission to wait.

Claire did not know whether that meant he was changing or merely learning the correct language.

She refused to decide too quickly.

Sophie walked into the kitchen carrying two restaurant menus she had brought home from Nora’s house.

“Mom?”

“Yeah?”

“If I ever have dinner with Dad again, can it be somewhere without fancy dresses?”

Claire smiled.

“Absolutely.”

Sophie placed one menu on the table.

She did not choose a date.

Claire did not ask her to.

For now, the invitation remained unopened between them.

And whether Derek would ever become the father Sophie deserved would depend on what he did when nobody needed him to perform anymore.
