Chapter 13 - Claire Prepared the Exposure Without a Show

There would be no public speech.
No dramatic company meeting.
Claire’s attorney coordinated with the lender.
Peterson’s counsel organized the company records.
Maya reconciled payments to Vanessa’s consulting entity.
A forensic accountant reviewed the disputed borrowing request and confirmed Claire’s signature had not been executed through her normal authorization process.
The evidence was boring.
That made it stronger.
Email chains.
Bank access logs.
Approval dates.
Consulting invoices.
Board minutes.
The preserved audio from Sophie’s phone.
Nothing depended on one magical document.
Together, the pieces told the same story.
Derek and Vanessa had known Halston was in financial trouble.
They had attempted to preserve credit access under Claire’s name.
Vanessa had been receiving unusually large payments while holding a contract that rewarded her if the company survived long enough to sell.
And when Sophie accidentally overheard them, they had responded by treating the child as the problem.
Claire also made one personal decision.
She would not seek ownership of Derek’s company as revenge during the divorce.
She wanted financial disentanglement.
Not his business.
Her attorney asked whether she was sure.
“Yes.”
“Even if your marital claim gives you leverage?”
“I’ll claim what I’m legally entitled to.”
Claire paused.
“I’m not building my future around controlling what destroyed my marriage.”
That boundary cost her negotiating power.
May you like
It also gave her something she had not felt in months.
Clarity.
