Chapter 7 - DANIEL’S MOTHER HAD KNOWN MORE THAN SHE ADMITTED

Evelyn asked to meet Claire through Rachel.

That surprised everyone.

The meeting took place at Rachel’s office.

Daniel did not attend.

Evelyn arrived in navy wool and pearls as if she were appearing before a board.

She sat.

Did not apologize.

“I did not know Daniel struck you.”

Claire stared.

“You watched him.”

“I mean I did not know he would.”

“That sentence doesn’t help.”

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“I’m trying to explain.”

“Then explain.”

Evelyn knew three things.

First, Mercer Architectural Fixtures had cash-flow problems.

Second, Daniel had been using household money to cover shortfalls.

Third, the Irvine building did not belong to Daniel.

Claire leaned forward.

“Did you know about the purchase option?”

Evelyn hesitated.

That was enough.

“How much?”

“Daniel said you had agreed in principle.”

“I didn’t.”

“He said paperwork was being cleaned up.”

Claire almost laughed.

Family vocabulary again.

Handled.

Cleaned up.

Temporary.

All words meaning consent would arrive later because Daniel had already acted.

“What did you know about the mansion?”

Evelyn looked offended.

“I know you’re on the deed.”

Claire blinked.

That hurt more than expected.

“You knew?”

“Of course.”

“Then why did you tell me to get out of your house?”

Evelyn looked away.

Because that had never been about ownership.

It had been about rank.

After a long silence, Evelyn said:

“I thought Daniel would eventually be added.”

“Why?”

“You’re married.”

“Not an answer.”

Evelyn’s expression became colder.

“You have more than enough.”

There it was.

Not legal reasoning.

Moral entitlement.

Claire had assets.

Daniel had obligations.

Therefore, everything Claire owned was available if the family needed it.

Evelyn said:

“You married into a family with responsibilities.”

Claire answered:

“So did Daniel.”

Evelyn looked confused.

Exactly.

The concept had never run both directions.

Before leaving, Evelyn said something Claire did not understand until later.

“The building isn’t the one you should be worried about.”

Claire stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn’s face changed instantly.

May you like

Too late.

She had already said it.
