Chapter 1 - THE SLAP IN THE MARBLE FOYER

Daniel’s hand was already moving when Claire realized he had chosen his mother.

The slap landed across her left cheek with a crack that silenced the entire foyer.

Claire’s head snapped sideways.

One heel slipped against the polished marble, and she caught herself against the flower table before she went down.

Behind Daniel, Evelyn Mercer raised a white handkerchief delicately to the corner of one eye.

She was not crying.

She looked satisfied.

“Get out of my mother’s house before I teach you how a wife learns respect,” Daniel said.

Claire slowly turned back toward him.

Six relatives stood in the dining-room doorway.

Nobody stepped forward.

Twenty minutes earlier, the argument had begun over something stupid.

Evelyn wanted Claire to cancel a planned weekend with her sister because Evelyn was hosting an anniversary dinner.

Claire said no.

Evelyn called her selfish.

Claire reminded her that she had spent seven years rearranging her schedule whenever Evelyn demanded it.

Then Evelyn said:

“You live under my roof. You can show some gratitude.”

Claire had laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because she finally understood that Evelyn genuinely believed the mansion belonged to her.

Daniel did too.

Apparently.

Claire reached for her purse.

Daniel grabbed the strap and violently yanked her backward.

The leather cut into Claire’s shoulder.

“Leave the jewelry,” Evelyn said. “The car keys too. Everything my son paid for. You came here with nothing.”

Claire looked at Daniel’s hand gripping her purse.

Then at Evelyn’s pearls.

Then at the chandelier above them that Claire had personally paid to restore three years earlier.

Something inside her became completely still.

She knocked Daniel’s hand away.

Hard.

Daniel recoiled.

Claire opened her purse and removed her phone.

“That ten-thousand-dollar allowance never came from Daniel.”

Evelyn lowered the handkerchief.

Claire continued.

“Neither did this house.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Claire opened her banking app.

Evelyn’s phone vibrated almost immediately.

She looked down.

Her expression changed.

Claire opened another file.

A property document.

She held the screen toward them without offering it.

“You should have checked whose name was on the deed before you threw me out.”

Daniel moved closer.

“Give me that.”

Claire stepped backward.

Another document thumbnail appeared beside the first.

Daniel saw only the property photograph.

A beige commercial building in Irvine.

His face went pale.

Claire noticed.

Evelyn did too.

“What is that?” she asked.

Daniel lunged for the phone.

Claire jerked it beyond his reach.

May you like

And for the first time that evening, she understood that Daniel already knew she owned something else.

He had simply been counting on her never finding out how he was using it.
