Chapter 6 - EVELYN’S ALLOWANCE WAS CLAIRE’S TOO
The household review produced the next betrayal.
Claire had known Evelyn received money every month.
She thought Daniel paid it.
He certainly implied that he did.
Whenever Evelyn complained about expenses, Daniel said:
“I send you ten thousand dollars. What else do you need?”
Claire assumed the money came from his personal distributions from Mercer.
It did not.
For twenty-eight months, the $10,000 monthly payment to Evelyn had been funded through the same household account Claire replenished.
Daniel moved it automatically two days after Claire’s investment transfer arrived.
Claire stared at the pattern.
$10,000 in.
$10,000 out.
Not every month perfectly.
Close enough.
Her “allowance” had never been an allowance to Claire.
It was a pipeline.
Her money entered.
Daniel redistributed it.
Then received credit from both women.
Claire almost laughed.
The absurdity was impressive.
She called Evelyn.
Not because Rachel advised it.
Because Claire needed one answer.
Evelyn picked up immediately.
“I hope you’ve calmed down.”
Claire said:
“The ten thousand Daniel gives you each month.”
“Yes?”
“Where do you think it comes from?”
“My son.”
“Why?”
Evelyn sounded annoyed.
“Because he told me.”
“That’s it?”
“What are you implying?”
Claire sat at the hotel desk with three years of statements open.
“The money comes from my investment account.”
Silence.
Then Evelyn laughed.
“Daniel handles your money.”
“No.”
“He’s your husband.”
“That doesn’t make my separate property his.”
“You’re being vulgar.”
Claire looked at the ceiling.
“Vulgar?”
“Marriage isn’t accounting.”
“It becomes accounting when you throw the accountant out of her own house.”
Evelyn hung up.
Ten minutes later Daniel called.
Claire ignored him.
Then another voicemail.
“You had no right upsetting Mom with incomplete financial information.”
Incomplete.
Claire saved that one too.
For the first time she understood Daniel’s central habit.
He did not always lie directly.
