THE DOOR CLOSES ON MARGARET

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

So did Ethan’s attorney.

So did the real family doctor, who looked at the pills and immediately said, “I did not prescribe these.”

Margaret sat on the cream sofa, stiff-backed, hands folded over her pearl bracelet as if she were receiving guests.

“You’re making a mistake,” she told Ethan.

He did not answer.

He stayed beside Claire while the doctor checked her pulse, her eyes, her breathing. Claire was shaken, exhausted, and weak from days of being medicated against her will, but she was safe.

Safe.

The word nearly broke Ethan.

He held her hand while she gave her statement.

Linda gave hers too.

At first, her voice shook. Then it grew stronger.

She told them about the locked phone, the canceled therapy, the hidden pill bottle, the threats, the documents, the staged stories Margaret had fed Ethan every night.

Margaret’s face stayed cold until Linda mentioned the phone call to Chicago.

Then the mask cracked.

“You called him?”

Linda wiped her tears.

“Yes, ma’am.”

Margaret looked at Claire with pure hatred.

Ethan stepped in front of his wife before the look could reach her fully.

“That’s enough.”

For the first time, Margaret had no room left to command.

When they escorted her toward the front door, she stopped beside Ethan.

“You’ll regret choosing her over blood.”

Ethan looked at Claire, then back at his mother.

“She is my family.”

The door closed behind Margaret.

And the house became quiet in a way it had not been for months.
