THE CALL THAT BROUGHT HIM HOME

Ethan was in a hotel conference room in Chicago when his phone rang from an unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then he saw the voicemail transcript appear.
It was only six words.
Please come home. She’s hurting Claire.
The room went silent around him, though no one had stopped talking.
Ethan stepped out into the hallway and called back immediately.
No answer.
He called Claire.
No answer.
He called his mother.
Margaret answered on the second ring, calm as ever.
“Ethan, darling. Everything all right?”
“Where is Claire?”
“She’s resting.”
“Put her on the phone.”
A pause.
“She had a difficult morning. The doctor advised quiet.”
“What doctor?”
“The one I told you about.”
“You never gave me his name.”
Another pause.
Smaller this time.
“Ethan, you sound tired.”
That was when he knew.
Not everything.
Not enough.
But he knew the shape of a lie.
He canceled the meeting, left the hotel within twelve minutes, and took the first flight home. The whole time, he replayed every conversation he had dismissed because it was easier to believe his mother was strict than cruel.
Claire saying, “I don’t like how she talks to Linda.”
Claire saying, “Your mother keeps moving my phone.”
Claire saying, “I feel worse after the medicine.”
He had kissed her forehead through a video call and said, “Just rest, baby. I’ll be home soon.”
Soon had not been soon enough.

By the time Ethan’s car pulled into the driveway, the front door was not fully closed.
Inside, he heard Claire crying.
