SWALLOW IT AND STAY QUIET

Claire’s back hit the edge of the wooden table.

Margaret’s hand was on her jaw.

The small white bottle was inches from her mouth.

“Swallow it and stay quiet,” Margaret said.

Claire twisted away, tears streaking through the makeup Margaret had forced Linda to apply over the bruise.

“No. Please.”

Linda stood behind them, shaking. “Mrs. Harrow, stop. Please stop.”

Margaret did not even look at her.

“You have been paid to clean, not think.”

Claire shoved weakly at Margaret’s wrist. The bottle slipped. Pills spilled from the opening and scattered across the table, then onto the rug and marble floor.

That sound — tiny white tablets striking hard floor — seemed to break something open.

Claire dropped to her knees.

Margaret grabbed for her again, but Claire crawled backward, one hand dragging over scattered pills. The wheelchair blocked her path. The legal folders slid off the table and landed beside her.

“You ruined everything,” Margaret snapped.

Claire looked up from the floor.

Her voice came out barely above a whisper.

“I was going to tell him.”

Margaret’s face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“You ungrateful little girl,” she said. “I built this family before you learned how to spell its name.”

Then the front door opened.

Ethan stepped inside with his suitcase.

And all the air left the room.
