LINDA HEARS EVERYTHING

Linda had worked for the Harrow family for eleven years.

She knew which paintings were hiding wall safes.

She knew which guests smiled at dinner and cried in guest bathrooms.

She knew Margaret Harrow never raised her voice unless she had already won.

But Claire made Linda remember the house before it turned cold.

Claire asked about Linda’s daughter. Claire remembered birthdays. Claire said thank you to people Margaret treated like furniture.

So when Margaret began locking Claire inside the upstairs suite “for safety,” Linda started listening.

She heard Claire crying at night.

She heard Margaret on the phone saying, “Ethan will believe me. He always does.”

She heard the lawyer’s name.

She heard the word incapacity.

And one afternoon, while Margaret was at a charity lunch, Linda found the second bottle of pills hidden in Margaret’s handbag.

The label had been peeled halfway off.

The prescription was not Claire’s.

Linda took a photograph with shaking hands.

She almost sent it to Ethan.

Then she remembered Margaret’s warning.

“If you interfere with family matters, I’ll make sure no respectable home hires you again.”

Linda needed the job.

Her daughter needed tuition.

So Linda stayed silent.

Until the day Claire crawled from the wheelchair, grabbed the phone from the side table, and whispered, “Linda, please. Call Ethan.”

Linda looked toward the hallway.

Margaret’s heels were already coming.
