THE PAPERS ON THE FLOOR

Margaret laughed once.

It was a brittle sound.

“You are being manipulated.”

Ethan bent down, picked up one of the folders, and read the first page.

His face changed with every line.

Temporary medical guardianship.

Financial protection.

Emergency spousal override.

The documents were written to look careful, responsible, loving.

But Ethan saw what they really were.

A cage with legal margins.

“You were trying to take control of her trust,” he said.

Margaret lifted her chin.

“I was trying to protect this family.”

“From my wife?”

“From weakness.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

Ethan looked at her and felt the full weight of what he had missed. The thinner face. The shaking hands. The fear whenever Margaret spoke.

He knelt beside Claire.

“Did she force you to take those?”

Claire tried to answer, but the words failed.

Linda answered instead.

“Yes.”

Margaret snapped, “She is lying.”

Ethan picked up the white bottle from the floor. The label was crooked, freshly applied, not from their family pharmacy. He held it toward Linda.

“Take a picture of everything.”

Linda nodded quickly.

Margaret stepped forward. “Ethan, give me that.”

He stood.

“No.”

“You do not say no to me.”

For a moment, Ethan looked like the boy Margaret had raised to obey.

Then he looked at Claire again.

Crying on the floor.

Bruised.

Terrified.

May you like

Still reaching for him like he might disappear.

“Yes,” he said quietly. “I do.”
