Chapter 9 - THE NOTE ON THE PATIO TABLE
Claire sat at the kitchen table until nearly two in the morning with Ava’s note open in front of her.
It wasn’t a confession exactly.
It was worse in some ways and more hopeful in others.
Ava had expected something.
Just not that much.
Claire texted only once:
Come after school tomorrow. No Daniel. No yelling. Just the truth.
Ava arrived at 4:17 p.m. wearing the same black graphic T-shirt from the barbecue, washed now, her phone still clenched in one hand like she expected to need it as armor.
Claire didn’t offer a speech. She offered lemonade in a glass instead of a pitcher.
Ava almost smiled, then didn’t.
“I’m not here to apologize for all of it,” she said.
“Fine.”
“I’m here because if Dad finds out I told you anything, he’ll say I ruined everything.”
Claire sat across from her.
“Ava, he already did.”
For a minute the girl looked sixteen in the rawest, least strategic way possible.
Then the words came.
She had found the 529 statements in Carol’s condo mailbox in April. Daniel told her not to panic, said he’d only borrowed from the account because a big payment was coming from a contractor and Claire was “refusing to help the family.” When Ava asked why Claire didn’t know, Daniel said Claire cared more about controlling money than about Ava going to college.
“I believed some of it,” Ava admitted. “Not all.”
“Then why the barbecue?”
Ava twisted the bracelet around her fingers.
“Because every time I told him to stop blaming you, he’d act normal for like two days and then start again. But if he thought I was on his side, he kept talking.”
Claire held still.
“Talking about what?”
Ava looked up.
“About how if you finally snapped in front of everyone, then nobody would care what he did with the money.”
Claire felt the room narrow.
“So you made a scene.”
Ava nodded once.
“I knew he’d take my side. I thought maybe he’d yell. I thought Grandma would stop it. I didn’t think—”
She stopped.
She didn’t have to finish.
Claire already knew the rest.

Instead, she had turned Claire into the bait.
