Chapter 14 - THE LAST CHANCE TO TELL THE TRUTH
Before the first temporary hearing, Daniel’s attorney proposed a settlement discussion.
Daniel would move into a short-term rental. Claire would remain in the house. The home-equity issue would be frozen. Ava could choose where to stay pending school and counseling arrangements. In return, Daniel wanted one important thing:
that Claire not “characterize the barbecue incident as physical abuse in broader family communications.”
Erica slid the proposal across the table.
Claire almost laughed.
He still wanted language managed more than harm acknowledged.
So she asked for one private minute with Daniel in the hallway outside the conference room, with both attorneys in view.
“You can still tell Ava the whole truth yourself,” Claire said.
“She knows enough.”
“No. She knows what she discovered. Not what you were willing to make her help carry.”
Daniel folded his arms. “You want me humiliated.”
Claire shook her head. “I want you accurate.”
He said nothing.
“Tell your family you took her college money. Tell them you planned to refill it with a loan against my house. Tell them you used that barbecue to make me look like the problem when you were losing control.”
Daniel looked tired, not transformed.
“And then what?”
“Then at least the next part of Ava’s life isn’t built on your edited version of this one.”
He didn’t agree.
He didn’t apologize.
He just asked whether Claire was really prepared to end a marriage over “financial panic and one bad afternoon.”
Claire understood in that moment that Daniel would accept any description of his actions except the one that required accountability.

She walked back into the conference room and rejected the language restriction.
Once the hearing began and the financial records, redirected statements, and barbecue evidence were placed into the process, Daniel could no longer keep this inside the house on Zinnia Street.
